Chinese American Librarians Association Asia-Pacific Chapter successfully concluded its September Seminar Series, which focused on the influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on knowledge access and discovery in the library and education sectors. The event, held on September 26 and 27, 2024, brought together experts and professionals to delve into the current and future implications of AI in their fields.
The first session, “The Impact of AI on Knowledge Access and Discovery: An Assessment of Present and Future Developments,” was led by Charlene Chou, Head of Knowledge Access at New York University Libraries. Her presentation highlighted the transformative effects of AI on library services, emphasizing the need for strategic implementation to enhance resource discoverability while mitigating risks such as misinformation and bias.
In the second session, the first presentation, “Expanding Information Literacy Education in the AIGC Era,” Xuemei Zhang from Changsha University of Science and Technology Library discussed the integration of AI and critical thinking in information literacy education. Zhang showcased case studies that demonstrated the effectiveness of combining AI technology with critical thinking to cultivate innovative talents.
The second presentation, by Yanan Xie from Northeast Normal University Library, focused on “Information Literacy Education for Faculty and Students Integrating AI.” Xie detailed the various AI-related activities and services offered by the library, including social media campaigns, specialized training, credit courses, and personalized consultations. The session concluded with a thought-provoking exploration of the challenges and opportunities in AI information literacy education.
The two webinars were well-received by the audience, which included librarians, educators, and students from across the Asia-Pacific region. Participants engaged in lively discussions and exchanged ideas on how to leverage AI to improve library services and educational outcomes. It will be a testament to the CALA Asia-Pacific Chapter’s commitment to fostering innovation and advancement in library and information science. We are thrilled to see such a strong interest in AI and its applications in our field.
