Enhancing Patrons’ Well-Being: The Evolving Role of Librarians in the Age of GenAI – CALA AP Chapter’s July Webinar in 2025

In a groundbreaking webinar held in July by the CALA AP Chapter, librarians and researchers from across mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and North America came together for a pivotal discussion on the evolving role of libraries in the digital age. The session delved into the impact of library services, particularly research consultations, on patrons’ psychological well-being, especially in the context of the rising influence of generative AI.

This international dialogue was more than just an exchange of ideas—it was a call to rethink how libraries can continue to serve as pillars of intellectual and emotional support for researchers in an increasingly technology-driven world. Two speakers, Yali Feng and Lindsay Bahureksa, led the conversation, offering unique insights into how libraries can adapt to the GenAI context while maintaining strong, supportive relationships with patrons.

A key theme of the webinar is the psychological dimension of library services. The research reveals that patrons often perceive librarians not only as sources of information but as crucial supporters in their academic journey. While AI can assist in data analysis and information retrieval, it’s the personal connection with librarians that fosters a deeper sense of trust and clarity. Patrons appreciate the emotional support and sense of community that librarians provide—support that goes beyond simple information delivery to include helping them manage stress and build confidence.

They also highlighted that there is sometimes a disconnect between how librarians perceive the value of their services and how patrons experience them. Understanding the psychological and emotional impacts of research consultations can help shape library service design and professional development. The patron’s experience, particularly in a world increasingly influenced by AI, is critical to ensure libraries continue to meet their evolving needs.

Looking Ahead

The insights reinforce the importance of maintaining the human element in library services, even as GenAI tools become more integrated into research. Going forward, libraries will need to strike a balance—leveraging AI to enhance research efficiency while ensuring that librarians remain at the forefront of providing emotional and intellectual support to patrons. This webinar is just one example of how librarians are adapting to this digital transformation, and future collaborations and research will be key in shaping the future of library services.

Yali and Lindsay also shared their findings in this year’s ACRL Annual Conference. You can read their conference paper here: https://www.ala.org/sites/default/files/2025-03/AssessingImpact.pdf
