Report on the iConference 2024 Workshop: “The IFLA Guidelines for Professional LIS Education Programmes: Competencies Toward Excellence in Professional Practice”

Hosted by CALA members, Professor Juming Ji, and CALA-Asia Pacific Chapter Marketing Chair, Changhong(Bella) Wu, the workshop on the IFLA Guidelines for Professional LIS Education Programmes concluded successfully on April 22nd, 2024.

During the workshop, Professor Ji introduced the background, structure, and objectives of the IFLA Guidelines, while Ms. Wu interpreted the main content and its application in LIS educational programs. The workshop collected suggestions and opinions on the further implementation of the guidelines and formed groups for further research. Discussions revolved around comprehensive support for teacher information technology skills and principles for curriculum development. Suggestions were made to develop sub-guidelines targeting teacher qualifications and opportunities for collaboration between IFLA and UNESCO on digital literacy training for teachers in developing countries. Canadian teachers focused their discussions on the basic knowledge module FKA3 (ICT) and the boundaries of computer science. Experts from Thailand’s Open University expressed great interest in promoting the guidelines in Thailand. This collaboration between CALA-Asia Pacific Chapter and IFLA BSLISE working group is significant and will actively promote the global development of LIS education in the future.

About CALA-Asia Pacific Chapter:

CALA Asia Pacific chapter hopes to deepen CALA members and various chapters in US and Canada partnership with librarians, libraries, and library associations in Asia Pacific.; and enhance communication among Chinese librarians in Asia Pacific and CALA members in US and Canada. The IFLA Building Strong LIS Education (BSLISE) working group was responsible for developing the Library and Information Science Education Framework as a part of the IFLA Education and Training Section (SET) and Library Theory and Research Section (LTR) Action Plan. The framework includes two main parts: the Fundamental Knowledge Areas (FKA) of Library and Information Science and the elements that flexible education programs should have. It is applicable to all levels of higher education and helps improve the quality of LIS education programs, including undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education.
